Biography
Joshua Slaughter is the Democratic and Working Families Party candidate for the New York State Assembly, District 3, in the November 3, 2026 general election, challenging incumbent Republican Joseph DeStefano.[1][3] In a Ballotpedia survey, he described himself as a Laborers Local 66 political director and former chief of staff to a Suffolk County legislator.[2]
Slaughter graduated from Patchogue-Medford High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Albany in 2005.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, the biography he submitted says he has raised his family in Shirley for 17 years and studied political science at Albany, where he worked in the New York State Assembly.[2] It says he was chief of staff to former Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning for twelve years and has been a member of Laborers Local 66 since 2018, serving as its Long Island political director.[2]
Slaughter's survey says he helped secure $200 million for a sewer district in his community and helped preserve more than 1,000 acres of open space.[2] He also said he partnered with schools to launch what he described as the first union high school pre-apprenticeship program in New York State.[2] His stated priorities include good-paying jobs, local infrastructure projects such as an over- or under-pass at the William Floyd Parkway railroad crossing in Shirley, curbing home and auto insurance premium increases, and protecting drinking water and open space.[2]
