Addabbo was elected to the New York City Council in 2001 and served seven years representing the 32nd District, working on infrastructure, school technology and community-services funding.[1][2] He was elected to the State Senate in 2008, assumed office in 2009, and won the June 23, 2026 Democratic primary for re-election over Albert Baldeo.[1][2][3] He chairs the Senate Committees on Racing, Gaming and Wagering and on State-Native American Relations, and is a member of the Budget and Revenue, Cities 1, Education, Insurance, Rules, and Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs committees.[1]

According to his official biography, Addabbo is a multi-term member of the New York State Democratic Committee, ranking member of the South Queens Regular Democratic Club, a member of Ozone Park Kiwanis and of the Senate Bipartisan Task Force on Hurricane Sandy, and a 2026 New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame Honoree.[1] He is married to Dawn, and they have two daughters.[1]
