Biography

Jose M. Serrano is the Democratic and Working Families Party incumbent running unopposed for re-election to NY Senate District 29, which covers East Harlem and the South Bronx. A lifelong South Bronx resident and the son of former U.S. Representative José E. Serrano, he served on the New York City Council before winning his Senate seat in 2004. He chairs the Senate Majority Conference and the Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee.[1][2][3]

Serrano was born on June 19, 1972, in New York City and raised in the South Bronx; his father, José E. Serrano, served in the State Assembly and later the U.S. House of Representatives. His official biography describes him as a lifelong South Bronx resident.[2][3] He earned a B.A. in government from Manhattan College.[1][2] Before seeking elected office, he worked at the New York Shakespeare Festival, according to his official Senate biography, and served on Community Board 4.[1][2]

Serrano was elected to the New York City Council in 2001 to represent District 17 in the Bronx and served until 2004; his official biography says he chaired the Council's Committee on Cultural Affairs.[1][2][3] In November 2004 he was elected to the State Senate, defeating Republican incumbent Olga Mendez, who had switched parties earlier that year. He represented District 28 from 2005 to 2013 and has represented District 29 since 2013.[1][2][3]

Serrano chairs the Senate Majority (Democratic) Conference, a post Wikipedia dates to 2019, and the Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee, which he also chaired in 2009-2010.[1][2][3] His committee assignments also include Aging, Environmental Conservation, Libraries, Social Services, Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, and Women's Issues.[1][2] According to his official biography, as a committee chair during the 2010 budget negotiations he helped keep State Parks open, and he launched the Senate's "Open Legislation" tool for searching legislation; he also helped launch the "East Harlem Against Deportation" coalition.[2] The biography says he lives in the South Bronx with his wife and their two children.[2]
