Biography

Johnny Garrett is an attorney and Republican state representative for Tennessee House District 45 (Sumner County), serving since 2018. He is the Republican nominee for the open 6th District seat after defeating Van Hilleary and others in the August 6, 2026 primary, and describes himself as a pro-Trump Christian conservative.[1][2][3]

Garrett lives in Goodlettsville, in Sumner County. The General Assembly's member page says he is married with three children and attends Long Hollow Church in Hendersonville.[1] He holds a B.S. in business administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a J.D. from the Nashville School of Law, and works as an attorney in private practice representing individual clients and small- and medium-sized businesses.[1][2]

Garrett won the August 2018 Republican primary for House District 45 over Avery Field and was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives on November 6, 2018, taking office that day. According to his campaign website, he ran after President Trump took office.[2][4] His committee service in the House has included Insurance and Banking and Judiciary (as vice chair) in 2019-2020, and later Civil Justice, Commerce, and Finance, Ways, and Means. The member page lists him as House Majority Whip and on the Finance, Ways, and Means Committee, its Appropriations and Oversight and Civil Justice subcommittees, and the Joint Ways and Means Committee.[1][2]

Garrett's community roles listed by the General Assembly include president of Goodlettsville Little League Baseball, co-founder of the 100 Club of Sumner County, member of the Hendersonville Morning Rotary Club, and board member of the Vol State Community College Foundation and Forward Sumner Economic Partnership.[1] He won the August 6, 2026 Republican primary for the 6th District with 43.4 percent of the vote, ahead of Van Hilleary, Jon Henry and Natisha Brooks. According to his campaign website, he is running for Congress to support President Trump's agenda.[2][4]
