Joe P. Herrera

Joe P. Herrera is the Democratic candidate for the Texas State Senate, District 24, in the November 3, 2026 general election, challenging Republican incumbent Peter P. Flores.[1][3] He is a sales manager who ran for Texas House District 53 in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024.[1]

Joe P. Herrera was born in San Antonio, graduated from Holy Cross High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2001 and a master's degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2005.[1] His career experience includes working as a key account manager for the Ferrara Candy Company and as a sales representative for Hershey Chocolate, and he has been affiliated with the Medina County Democrats.[1] In a 2023 Ballotpedia survey, Herrera said he lives in Natalia, Texas, and was the first in his family to graduate from college.[2]

Herrera lost the March 6, 2018 Democratic primary for Texas House District 53 to Stephanie Lochte Ertel, then was the Democratic nominee in 2020, 2022 and 2024, losing the general elections to incumbent Andrew Murr in 2020 and 2022 and to Wesley Virdell in 2024.[1] He advanced unopposed from the March 3, 2026 Democratic primary for Senate District 24.[1] In his 2023 survey, he listed restoring abortion rights, increasing public school funding while opposing school vouchers, and improving access to healthcare in rural counties among his key messages.[2]
