Biography
Jason Probst is the Democratic candidate for the Kansas House of Representatives, District 102, in the November 3, 2026 general election, facing Republican incumbent Kyler Sweely; he previously represented the district from 2017 to 2025.[1][2] A former editor at The Hutchinson News, he sat on the House Agriculture and Commerce, Labor and Economic Development committees.[1]
Jason Probst was born in Wickenburg, Arizona, and earned an associate degree from Hutchinson Community College in 2001 and a bachelor's degree from Baker University in 2003, according to Ballotpedia.[1] Ballotpedia lists his career experience as including work as an editor at The Hutchinson News and as a manager with a content consulting and writing company.[1] In a 2020 Ballotpedia survey, he said he grew up in Reno County, had lived most of his life in Hutchinson, worked full time as a CNC machinist while attending college, and later worked as a reporter and editor for the Hutchinson News.[3]
Probst assumed office in the Kansas House on June 26, 2017, and left office on January 13, 2025; Kyler Sweely succeeded him in District 102.[1] Ballotpedia lists his 2023-2024 committee assignments as Agriculture; Commerce, Labor and Economic Development; and Legislative Post Audit, and says he was ranking minority member of the Rural Revitalization Committee in 2019-2020.[1] He advanced unopposed from the August 4, 2026 Democratic primary to the general election against Sweely.[1] In the 2020 survey, he listed Medicaid expansion, investment in startups and locally owned small businesses rather than corporate incentives, and rural infrastructure including education, highways and broadband among his goals.[3]
