Biography

Jamie Joyce is a Berkeley-based technologist, researcher, and nonprofit founder challenging incumbent Lateefah Simon in the general election; both are Democrats. According to her Ballotpedia profile, she founded the Society Library nonprofit and has worked on government-transparency projects at the Internet Archive. Her campaign centers on artificial-intelligence policy, government transparency, and a 650-page bill she has drafted, which she calls the MAD Act.[1][2]

Joyce was born in New Hampshire and now lives in Berkeley.[2] Her Ballotpedia Candidate Connection survey describes her as a "multidisciplinary expert, executive, and researcher living in Berkeley" who has led AI teams and been interviewed for a documentary on artificial intelligence.[1] Before her work in technology, she says, she oversaw environmental and humanitarian projects with vulnerable communities in more than 20 countries, and Ballotpedia lists her as chief operating officer of the international organization IDEAS For Us.[1][2]

Joyce founded the Society Library nonprofit and co-founded the Canonical Debate Labs research group, and Ballotpedia lists her as program co-lead of the Internet Archive's Democracy's Library program.[1][2] She says she has spent nearly a decade building technology tools that help governments make policy decisions, including legislative drafting tools.[1] Ballotpedia also lists board and advisory roles at Wikitongues and Atlas Computing, a Collective Intelligence Fellowship from the Foresight Institute and an AI for Human Reasoning Fellowship from the Future of Life Foundation.[2]

Joyce advanced from the June 2, 2026 top-two primary, where she received 15.6% of the vote to Simon's 84.2%.[3][2]
