Biography
James Hooper is the Republican nominee for Michigan's 12th District. A Detroit native who worked in Eastern Market and the building trades, he later did overseas mission work in Liberia. His campaign website emphasizes opposition to abortion, support for gun rights, reduced federal taxation, and stronger immigration enforcement.[1][2]
Hooper was born in Detroit and, his campaign website says, grew up on the city's east side.[1][2] According to the site, he worked for many years in Eastern Market and later in the building trades, and he is a precinct delegate.[2][3] He says he served overseas with Samaritan's Purse in Liberia, leading teams that rebuilt the African Bible College University and managing a water, sanitation and hygiene program, and that he worked with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association on a Franklin Graham Festival in Liberia.[2][3] He also says he was his mother's primary and then full-time caregiver as she had Alzheimer's disease.[2]
Hooper ran against Rep. Rashida Tlaib in the 2024 general election, receiving 25.4% of the vote, and won the Republican nomination again on August 4, 2026.[1]
