On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: NY State Senate · District 36

Biography

Jamaal Bailey is the Democratic candidate for re-election to New York State Senate District 36, which covers the northern Bronx and the Westchester County city of Mount Vernon. A Bronx native and lawyer who began in politics as an intern and aide to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, he has been a state senator since January 2017. He chairs the Senate Insurance Committee and the Bronx Democratic Party.[1][2][3]

Bailey was born in 1982 and raised in the Bronx, where he attended P.S. 83 in Morris Park, M.S. 181 in Co-op City and Bronx High School of Science; the nysenate.gov biography says he grew up in Wakefield and is a lifelong resident of the district.[2][3] He earned a B.A. from the University at Albany, SUNY, and a J.D. from CUNY School of Law.[2][3] His political career began as an intern to Assemblymember Carl Heastie; nysenate.gov says he interned for Heastie during his senior year at Albany and later served as community relations director for him, while Wikipedia describes the role as district director. He also served as a Democratic district leader in the 83rd Assembly District for six years.[2][3]

Bailey won a five-way Democratic primary on September 13, 2016, for the seat vacated when Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson resigned to take a position in the Cuomo administration. He defeated Conservative Robert Diamond in the November 8, 2016 general election and was re-elected in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024.[2] According to his nysenate.gov biography, his first term focused on criminal justice measures, including discovery, speedy trial and bail changes enacted in the 2019 budget, and the repeal of Civil Rights Law 50-a on police disciplinary records.[3] In the 2025-2026 session he chairs the Senate Insurance Committee, after previously chairing the Senate Codes Committee, and his other committees include Codes, Finance, Judiciary and Rules.[1][3]

Bailey has chaired the Bronx Democratic Party since September 2020, when he succeeded Marcos Crespo.[2] According to nysenate.gov, he is a member of Butler Memorial United Methodist Church and the Williamsbridge Branch of the NAACP, lives in Baychester with his wife and three children, and is a 2026 New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame honoree.[3]
