George Blumenthal

George Blumenthal is the Democratic candidate for the South Carolina House of Representatives, District 104, in the November 3, 2026 general election; the June 9, 2026 Democratic primary was canceled.[1] His campaign website describes him as an attorney with decades of insurance litigation experience who is running on homeowner insurance, a homestead protection law and limits on uncontrolled development.[2][3]

According to his campaign website, George Blumenthal was born in Detroit, Michigan, and attended Oxon Hill Senior High School, graduating in 1969.[4] He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1972 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore in 1978.[4] The site says his father served 12 years in the Maryland House of Delegates and his mother served in the Maryland State Senate.[3]

Blumenthal's resume lists work with the Maryland Department of Insurance, as an attorney in private practice in Maryland specializing in insurance litigation, and as a professor of business, economics and business law at Prince George's Community College in 1979 and 1980.[4] He writes that he spent forty-five years in insurance litigation and twenty years assisting the Maryland General Assembly in drafting insurance legislation, and that he briefed and argued Jennings v. Government Employees Insurance Company before the Maryland Supreme Court.[3] He lists Little River United Methodist Church as his church and says he has given free legal representation to veterans and active-duty service members.[4]

The campaign lists a South Carolina Homestead Act, an Equal Rights Amendment to the state constitution, fair homeowner's insurance, protections for seniors against elder abuse and financial scams, caps on non-economic damages, and opposition to consolidating county police and sheriff's departments among its priorities.[2]
