Gary St. Lawrence is the Democratic candidate for the Georgia State Senate, District 51, an open seat where he faces Republican Will Wade in the November 3, 2026 general election.[1][2] A U.S. Army veteran, he said in a Ballotpedia survey that he has spent 45 years as an investigative journalist and columnist.[3]
St. Lawrence served in the U.S. Army from 1980 to 1989, according to Ballotpedia, which also lists an associate degree from Northern Virginia Community College (1987) and a bachelor's degree from Ottawa University (2004).[1] In his survey response he said he earned a bachelor's degree from Ottawa University in Arizona and a master's from the University of the Incarnate Word in Texas, where he studied journalism and communications.[3] He wrote that his career as an investigative journalist and columnist involved reporting on corruption and government at levels from zoning boards and city councils to Congress.[3]
St. Lawrence's stated priorities include tax relief for retirees, people on fixed incomes and workers, including eliminating homestead property taxes on five residential acres or less, and expanded health care and support services for seniors and veterans, with at least one publicly funded full-service clinic in every county.[3] He also said he would seek to rewrite Georgia's Quality of Basic Education (QBE) formula and listed tax reform, affordable workforce housing and a higher state minimum wage among his policy interests.[3]
