Biography

Frank Mrvan is the Democratic U.S. Representative for Indiana's 1st District, first elected in 2020 and seeking a fourth term.[1][2][3] A former mortgage broker and pharmaceutical sales representative, he served as North Township trustee for 15 years before Congress and sits on the House Appropriations Committee.[1][2][4]

Mrvan was born and raised in Hammond, Indiana, graduated from Morton High School in 1987 and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ball State University in 1992.[1][4] He worked as a licensed mortgage broker and pharmaceutical sales representative before entering elected office.[1][4] He was appointed North Township trustee in November 2005 when his predecessor resigned and served until 2021, a total his official biography describes as 15 years.[1][2][4]

Mrvan announced his candidacy for Congress in 2020 after Rep. Pete Visclosky decided not to seek re-election, won a 14-candidate Democratic primary with 33% of the vote, and defeated Republican Mark Leyva in the general election, 57% to 40%.[4] He took office January 3, 2021, was re-elected in 2022 over Republican Jennifer-Ruth Green and in 2024 over Republican Randy Niemeyer, and defeated LaVetta Sparks-Wade in the May 5, 2026 Democratic primary.[1][4] In the 119th Congress he serves on the House Appropriations Committee and its Commerce, Justice, Science and Energy and Water Development subcommittees and is vice chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus.[1][2] His earlier House assignments included the Veterans' Affairs Committee, whose Technology Modernization subcommittee he chaired in 2021–22, and the Education and the Workforce Committee.[1]

According to his official biography, Mrvan is married to Jane and they have two daughters.[2]
