Biography
Eric Toney is the Republican nominee for Attorney General and the Fond du Lac County District Attorney. He lost narrowly to Josh Kaul in 2022 and is running again on a public-safety message focused on the state crime laboratories, fentanyl and what he calls the partisanship of the current Attorney General.[1][2][3]
Eric Toney was raised in a law enforcement family, according to his campaign.[2] He graduated from Fond du Lac High School, earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science from St. Norbert College in 2006 and a law degree from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in 2009.[4][2] During law school he was a certified student attorney in the Fond du Lac County district attorney's office, and before he was elected district attorney he was an attorney at O'Rourke Law Offices.[4]
Toney was elected Fond du Lac County district attorney in 2012, took office in 2013, and was re-elected in 2016 and 2020.[4][2] His campaign says he has prosecuted cases ranging from homicide and sexual assault to drug trafficking, financial crimes and racketeering, helped establish the county's first Drug Court and chaired an Opioid Coalition.[2] He is a past president of the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association and, according to his campaign, was named Wisconsin's 2024 District Attorney of the Year.[2]
Toney won the August 9, 2022 Republican primary for Attorney General, defeating Adam Jarchow and Karen Mueller, and received 49.3% of the vote in the general election, narrowly losing to Josh Kaul.[4] He advanced from the August 11, 2026 Republican primary for the office.[4]
