Eliott Rodriguez is the Democratic nominee in Florida's 27th District and a first-time candidate. Born in New York City to Cuban immigrant parents, he worked for more than 40 years in broadcast journalism, most of it in South Florida, and retired as a longtime CBS4 Miami anchor in December 2025. His campaign focuses on affordability, immigration and protecting Social Security and Medicare.[1][2][3][4]

Rodriguez was born in New York City to Cuban immigrant parents who left Cuba before 1959. He says his parents were union workers who later became small-business owners.[2][3] WLRN reported that his parents brought him from New York to grow up in Miami in the 1960s.[5]

Rodriguez worked in broadcast journalism for more than 40 years, the large majority of it in South Florida, and says he interviewed Fidel Castro during his career.[3] He retired as the longtime anchor of CBS4 News in Miami in December 2025.[4][5]

Rodriguez announced his candidacy as a Democrat on March 10, 2026.[5] He won the August 18, 2026 Democratic primary over former prosecutor Robin Peguero, 54% to 46%, and WLRN describes him as a political novice.[4]
