Biography

Doug Jones is a lawyer and the Democratic nominee for governor of Alabama, and a former U.S. senator who served from 2018 to 2021 after winning a 2017 special election. Earlier he was U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1997 to 2001.[1][3] He is running on expanding Medicaid, eliminating the state grocery tax and taxes on tips and overtime, raising the minimum wage, a one-year moratorium on data centers, and a citizen ballot-initiative process.[2]

Jones was born in Fairfield, Alabama, graduated from the University of Alabama in 1976, and earned his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1979.[3]

He began as staff counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney from 1980 to 1984, and then spent years in private practice before being appointed U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama in 1997. In that office he prosecuted two Ku Klux Klan members for the 1963 Birmingham church bombing and indicted Eric Rudolph.[3]

Jones won a 2017 special election for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions and lost re-election to Tommy Tuberville in 2020. He won the Democratic nomination for governor in May 2026, setting up a rematch with Tuberville.[3][4]
