Biography

Connie Chan is a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 1 since her election in 2020, and chairs the Board's Budget Committee. Born in Hong Kong and raised in San Francisco, she worked as a community organizer and in city government, including as a legislative aide and as a staffer for then-District Attorney Kamala Harris, before running for office. She is running for the open 11th District seat on a platform that her campaign describes as a working people's plan, with an emphasis on affordability and community input on development.[1][2][3]

According to her campaign website, Chan was born in Hong Kong and moved to San Francisco at age 13 with her mother and younger brother, and the family obtained a rent-controlled apartment in Chinatown.[2] She earned a high school diploma from Galileo High School and a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis.[1][2]

Chan began her career as a volunteer Chinese interpreter with the San Francisco Bar Association's Volunteer Legal Outreach and as a community organizer for SF SAFE and the Community Youth Center, according to her campaign website.[2] In 2006 she became a legislative aide to then-Supervisor Sophie Maxwell. She later worked as a public safety and communications aide and Asian American and Pacific Islander community liaison for then-District Attorney Kamala Harris, as a legislative aide to then-Supervisor Aaron Peskin, and as a representative of then-Assemblymember Kevin Mullin.[2][1] She also held administrative roles at the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and at City College of San Francisco. In her 2020 Ballotpedia survey she describes about fifteen years in leadership positions at those two institutions, including overseeing capital projects and the implementation of Free City College.[2][1]

Chan was first elected in 2020 to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 1 (the Richmond District and surrounding neighborhoods); Ballotpedia lists her tenure as beginning in 2021 and her term as ending in 2029.[1][2] She has chaired the Board's Budget Committee since February 2023 and is a member of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, the Local Agency Formation Commission, and the Free City College Oversight Committee, according to her campaign website. She says she created a $400 million revenue risk reserve in the 2025-2026 city budget.[2] She advanced from the June 2, 2026 top-two primary, where she received 29.7% of the vote, to the general election for the seat Nancy Pelosi is leaving. Per her campaign website, she lives in the Richmond District with her partner, a San Francisco firefighter, and their son.[1][2]
