Biography

Chuck Hubbard is the Democratic nominee challenging incumbent Virginia Foxx in North Carolina's 5th Congressional District.[1][2] A Wilkes County native, he spent more than forty years as a local journalist at the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, the newspaper his grandfather founded, according to his campaign website.[2][3] He says he is running on affordability, public education, and protecting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.[2]

Hubbard was born in Bryson City, North Carolina, and describes himself as a native of Wilkes County with family roots across the state.[1][2] He graduated from Wilkes Central High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Wofford College in 1985.[1] According to his campaign website, he began working at age 8 in the print shop of the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, a newspaper founded by his grandfather, began covering news for it at 16 as a student, and joined full-time after college.[2] The Yadkin Ripple reported that his grandfather founded the paper in 1932.[3]

Hubbard worked as a journalist for more than forty years, according to his campaign website.[2] In 2025 he said he planned to run for North Carolina's 5th District in 2026, and he won the March 3, 2026 Democratic primary, defeating Kyah Creekmore, 56.7% to 43.3%.[4][1] He has served on the boards of the Wilkes Recovery Revolution, the Wilkes Child Abuse Prevention Team and the Wilkes Prison Ministry.[2] His campaign site says he lives with his wife Shari, who served over twenty years as a State Trooper, and that they have three daughters and two grandchildren.[2]
