Chris Pappas is the Democratic nominee for the open New Hampshire U.S. Senate seat. A Manchester native who co-owns his family's restaurant, he served in the state House, as Hillsborough County treasurer and on the Executive Council before winning New Hampshire's 1st District U.S. House seat in 2018. He announced his Senate campaign in April 2025 after Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said she would not seek re-election.[1][2][3][5]
Pappas was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1980, and is a descendant of Greek immigrants. He attended public schools in Manchester, graduating from Manchester Central High School in 1998, and earned a bachelor's degree in government from Harvard University in 2002.[1][4][5]He is a co-owner of his family's restaurant, the Puritan Backroom in Manchester, which his great-grandfather founded and which his campaign website describes as a landmark business he ran before entering Congress.[1][4][5]
As a high school student, Pappas volunteered on Jeanne Shaheen's 1996 gubernatorial campaign. He was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives after graduating and served two terms, from 2002 to 2006. He then served as treasurer of Hillsborough County from 2007 to 2011, losing a 2010 re-election bid to Bob Burns. In 2012 he won the Executive Council seat for District 4 by defeating Burns, and he served on the council from 2013 to 2019.[1][4][5]He won the Democratic primary for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District in 2018 and has represented the district in the U.S. House since 2019. Ballotpedia notes that he was the first openly gay U.S. House member elected from New Hampshire.[1][3][5]
In the House, Pappas serves on the Veterans' Affairs and Transportation and Infrastructure committees, and he has served as co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus.[1][2]He announced his Senate candidacy on April 3, 2025, and won the September 8, 2026, Democratic primary with 64.6% of the vote, ahead of Karishma Manzur (33.2%).[3][5]According to his campaign website, Pappas lives in Manchester with his husband, Vann.[4]
