Biography
Chris Murray is the Democratic and Working Families Party candidate for New York State Senate District 1 in the November 3, 2026 general election, running against incumbent Republican Anthony Palumbo.[1][2] He is a lawyer who, in a Ballotpedia survey, said he has practiced law for roughly 40 years and is an environmental attorney.[1][3]
Murray earned a bachelor's degree from the University at Albany in 1984 and a law degree from Georgetown Law in 1987, according to Ballotpedia.[1]
In a Ballotpedia survey, Murray said he was motivated to run by what he described as the erosion of democracy under the Trump administration and by local Republican officials' lack of opposition to it.[3] He said he released an "Affordability Agenda" with five goals: reducing the state sales tax, health care for New Yorkers, support for first-time home buyers, increased access to public education, and a statewide gas tax holiday.[3] He also said he opposes data centers on Long Island, supports legislation ending local cooperation with ICE, and wants to improve services for the disability community, noting that he has a son with autism.[3]
