DCandidate

On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: U.S. House · Oregon's 2nd District

Biography

Chris Beck is the Democratic (and Independent Party of Oregon) nominee for Oregon's 2nd Congressional District. A former state legislator from Phoenix, he worked in rural land-use and conservation and later as a rural economic policy adviser at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He says his priorities include rural health care access, affordability and land-use planning.[1][2]

Chris Beck says he was born in Portland and attended public schools, and he graduated from Jackson High School.[1] He earned a bachelor's degree from Brown University in 1985 and graduated from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 2005.[1] He began his career as legislative staff in the Oregon Legislature, and news reports also say he worked for John Kitzhaber when Kitzhaber was Senate president and for Earl Blumenauer when Blumenauer was a Portland city councilor.[1][2]

Beck worked for more than a decade for rural land-use and conservation nonprofits, including as a land-conservation real estate negotiator with the Trust for Public Land, helping conserve land in the Columbia Gorge and elsewhere in Oregon.[1][2] He then served three terms in the Oregon House of Representatives (1997-2003), representing House District 12 in Lane County.[2] After leaving the Legislature, he spent six years as a rural economic policy adviser at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., during the Obama administration.[1][2]

In 2026 Beck won the six-candidate May 19 Democratic primary with 34.4% of the vote; the Oregon Capital Chronicle describes him as living in Phoenix.[3][2]
