Biography

Bruce Guthrie is the Libertarian candidate for the Washington House of Representatives, District 21-Position 2, in the November 3, 2026 general election, facing incumbent Lillian Ortiz-Self (D).[1][3] In a 2024 Ballotpedia survey, he described himself as a retired operations, sales and marketing executive with a second career in teaching.[2]

Bruce Guthrie was born in Evanston, Illinois, and graduated from New Trier East High School.[1] According to Ballotpedia, he earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1987, a graduate degree from Northwestern University in 1992 and a graduate degree from Seattle University in 2008.[1] In his 2024 survey answers, he said he moved from the Midwest to Washington in 1994 and has lived in Edmonds since 2008, and that he has worked as a substitute math and science teacher at private schools.[2]

Guthrie said in the same survey that he ran as a Libertarian for U.S. Congress in Washington's 2nd Congressional District in 2002 and 2004 and for U.S. Senate in 2006, and that he was vice chair of the Libertarian Party of Washington in 2007 and 2008.[2] He also said he ran for the 21st Legislative District House seat in 2016 and for the Mukilteo School Board in 2019.[2] Ballotpedia lists him as a candidate in the 2024 primary for District 21-Position 2, in which Ortiz-Self and Kristina Mitchell advanced and he did not.[1]
