Brian Poindexter is the Democratic nominee for Ohio's 7th District. A union ironworker and apprenticeship instructor for Ironworkers Local 17, he was elected to the Brook Park City Council in 2017 and won a crowded Democratic primary on May 5, 2026. He describes his campaign as centered on workers' wages, health care costs and ending corporate money in politics.[1]

Poindexter graduated from John Marshall High School and earned an associate degree from Cuyahoga Community College.[1] He describes his father as a union machinist and says he started working in a machine shop at 15.[1] He has worked as a union ironworker and, by his own account, spent about 20 years as an ironworker and apprenticeship instructor. As of 2026 he is an apprenticeship instructor for Ironworkers Local 17, according to the Ohio Capital Journal.[1][2]

Poindexter was elected to the Brook Park City Council in 2017 and has served as an at-large member.[1] He won the May 5, 2026 Democratic primary with 37.0% of the vote, ahead of Ed FitzGerald (21.6%) and other candidates, and is challenging Republican Rep. Max Miller.[1][2]
