Biography
Brett Nielsen is the Democratic candidate for the Utah House of Representatives, District 51, in the November 3, 2026 general election, where he faces incumbent Republican Leah Hansen.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, Nielsen said he grew up on a small farm in rural Idaho and works as a project management consultant.[2]
Nielsen advanced from the Democratic convention for District 51 on April 2, 2026, and the Democratic primary scheduled for June 23, 2026, was canceled.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, he said he was previously a Republican, still holds values including limited and efficient government and support for small businesses and farmers, and chose to run as a Democrat because he did not fully align with the direction of the Republican Party.[2]
Nielsen named accountability, affordability and working-class concerns as his three key campaign messages.[2] He said he wants transparent and responsive government, tax relief that prioritizes ordinary citizens, responsible growth in the fast-growing district, and help for farmers and locals to afford and maintain their land.[2]
