DCandidate

On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: U.S. Senate · South Carolina

Biography

Annie Andrews is a Charleston pediatrician and the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in South Carolina. She practiced at the Medical University of South Carolina and was the 2022 Democratic nominee in the 1st Congressional District. She describes herself as a pediatrician and a mom, not a politician, and has pledged not to accept corporate PAC money.[1][2][3][5]

Andrews was born in 1981 in Paducah, Kentucky, and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana.[9] She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Dayton, an M.D. from the University of Cincinnati and a master's degree in clinical research from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and she completed a pediatrics residency in Cincinnati.[9] She moved to South Carolina's Lowcountry in 2009 and worked about 14 years at MUSC Children's Hospital in Charleston as a pediatric hospitalist, becoming an associate professor of pediatrics there.[1][9] According to her campaign website, she spent nearly two decades in children's hospitals before turning to advocacy and policy work on school safety, health-care access and abortion rights.[2] She became politically active after the 2018 Parkland shooting, joining Moms Demand Action and doing clinical research on firearm injury prevention in children; she has worked on reducing pediatric firearm injuries through secure-storage counseling and gun-safety education.[1][9]

Andrews announced in November 2021 that she would run for Congress in South Carolina's 1st District.[1] As the Democratic nominee in 2022 she lost to Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, receiving 42.5% of the vote to Mace's 56.4%.[5] She resigned from MUSC in 2023 and founded a political organization focused on issues affecting children, including climate change, gun violence and childhood poverty, with an affiliated political action committee, Their Future PAC.[6][9]

Andrews announced her U.S. Senate campaign on May 29, 2025, challenging Sen. Lindsey Graham.[3][6] She won the June 9, 2026 Democratic primary with 61.5% of the vote, ahead of Brandon Brown and Kyle Freeman.[4][7] Graham died on July 11, 2026, and Gov. Henry McMaster appointed his sister, Darline Graham, to the seat; Andrews now faces Graham in the November 3 general election.[4][8] Andrews lives in Charleston with her three children, who attend public schools, according to her campaign website.[2]
