Biography

Angela Gonzales-Torres is a Democrat who describes herself as a democratic socialist, running for California's 34th District. A Highland Park native, she has worked in higher-education counseling and affordable-housing programs and has held local civic roles, including president of the Highland Park Neighborhood Council. Angela Gonzales-Torres, according to her campaign website, was born and raised in Highland Park, the daughter of a deportee raised by a single mother who relied on programs such as SNAP and Medicaid.[2] She describes herself as a lifelong Angeleno whose path went from community organizer to congressional candidate.[1] She pursued higher education and now works supporting people transitioning from prison into universities, and she promotes intergenerational permanent affordable housing.[2] Ballotpedia describes her as an academic counselor at Pasadena City College and a program director for a permanent affordable housing project.[3]

Gonzales-Torres has served as president of the Highland Park Neighborhood Council, as a regional representative on Metro's Public Safety Advisory Committee, and in the Los Angeles Mayor's Office.[2][3] She describes herself as a democratic socialist, and Ballotpedia reports that Leaders We Deserve, the Democratic Socialists of America's Los Angeles chapter and Justice Democrats have endorsed her.[2][3] She placed second in the June 2, 2026 nonpartisan primary with 30.7% of the vote (36,708 votes), advancing to a same-party general election against incumbent Jimmy Gomez.[3]
