Biography
Ammie Akin is an educator and entrepreneur running as the Republican nominee for Alabama's 7th Congressional District. Her campaign says she began her career teaching students with special needs in Hoover, holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Samford University, and co-founded what it describes as the country's first "shared" nonprofit facility. She won the August 11, 2026 special Republican primary and lists affordability, rural health care, education, and support for law enforcement among her priorities.[1][2][3]
According to her campaign website, Akin earned degrees from the University of Alabama and a master's degree and a doctorate in educational leadership from Samford University. She began her career about 25 years ago teaching a group of students with special needs in Hoover, and later helped raise funds for and build a campus for a program called Unless U.[2] Akin describes a career in education as a teacher, principal and nonprofit leader, and says she has taught future principals and superintendents at the University of Alabama.[4][2]
Her campaign describes her as an entrepreneur, multi-level educator and longtime advocate for people with disabilities, and as co-founder of a nonprofit facility it calls the first of its kind in the country. According to her campaign website, she and her husband, Will, are developing Hub in the Hills, a privately funded project to turn a former elementary school into a shared campus for nonprofit organizations and programs for adults with disabilities. They have three sons.[1][2] Akin won the August 11, 2026 special Republican primary with 73.4% of the vote over David Perry, a pastor in Selma.[3][4]
