Biography
Amar Mukunda is the Democratic candidate for Maryland State Senate District 39 in the November 3, 2026 general election.[1] An engineer and U.S. Army Reserve veteran, he won the June 23, 2026 Democratic primary over incumbent Nancy King and Destiny Drake West.[1]
Mukunda graduated from Walt Whitman High School, earned a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 2015 and a graduate degree from Stanford University in 2025, and has worked as an engineer.[1] In a Ballotpedia survey, his campaign said he was born and raised in Montgomery County, the son of immigrants, received a master's degree in Energy and Infrastructure Engineering from Stanford, served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Combat Engineer, and helped run what it called Maryland's largest gun violence prevention program.[2]
The survey said his campaign is focused on reclaiming democracy, lowering the cost of living, creating gun-free schools, and meeting challenges including artificial intelligence, climate and infrastructure, and that as a senator he would close state-law loopholes so that federal immigration authorities cannot obtain state data without a warrant.[2]
