DCandidate

On the ballot Nov 3, 2026: U.S. Senate · Montana

Biography

Alani Bankhead is the Democratic nominee for the open U.S. Senate seat in Montana. She is a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and former federal supervisory special agent who describes a career in counterintelligence, protective operations and child-exploitation investigations. She is running on affordability, accountability and protecting the vulnerable.[1][2][3]

Bankhead grew up moving every one to three years as the child of a military parent, and she later chose to settle in Montana.[2] She earned a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University in 2004, where she double-majored in Latin American studies and criminal justice, and a graduate degree from Troy University in 2012.[4]

Bankhead served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a lieutenant colonel.[2][4] According to her campaign, her work included human-intelligence operations against Al Qaeda in Iraq, arresting child predators in Japan, commanding a unit in Kuwait, and serving as head bodyguard to a senior Pentagon official.[2] Her campaign press kit says that as senior bodyguard to the Secretary of the Air Force she led more than 200 agents on 700 protective missions, and that she led an FBI and Defense Department counterintelligence task force.[3] KPAX reported that when she entered the race she remained in the Air Force Reserves and planned to retire the following month.[5]

After active duty, Bankhead led Latin American investigations and law-enforcement training for an international anti-slavery organization and, she says, helped build and lead Operation Keiki Shield in Hawai'i, a multi-agency effort against child exploitation.[2][3] KPAX reported that she spent much of her career investigating crimes such as human trafficking and child sexual abuse, including time with the Hawaii Attorney General's office.[5] She later became a certified professional coach and founded Mighty Sparrow Coaching.[1][2]

Bankhead lives in Helena; KPAX reported that she and her husband, both active-duty military members, came to Montana about three years before her campaign launch, after he retired, and she describes Montana as the first home she chose rather than one assigned by military service.[5][2] She won the June 2, 2026 Democratic primary and said at an August 10 rally that she would stay in the race through November 3, despite pressure from some Democrats to withdraw in favor of independent Seth Bodnar.[4][6][7]
