Governor of Wisconsin

Statewide — all of Wisconsin

General election · Tuesday, November 3, 2026

Sources re-checked October 19, 2026 · How we research

  • Open seat: incumbent Democratic Gov. Tony Evers announced on July 24, 2025 that he would not run for a third term.[2][1]
  • Democratic primary (Aug. 11): Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley won with about 39.8% of the vote, about 3,700 votes ahead of state Rep. Francesca Hong (about 39.4%). Crowley had suspended his campaign on July 8 and re-entered on July 18 after Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez withdrew; Evers endorsed him.[3][1]
  • Republican primary (Aug. 11): U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany won with about 95% of the vote over Andy Manske; President Trump had endorsed Tiffany in January 2026.[1][6]
  • Wisconsin elects governor and lieutenant governor on a joint ticket. The Wisconsin Elections Commission's June 2026 ballot-access report recommended denying every independent or minor-party filer for governor, including David D. King (1,731 valid signatures; 2,000 required); The Green Papers lists King as an independent write-in candidate for governor. A printed municipal ballot for November 3 (City of Glendale) lists only the Tiffany/Varnam and Crowley/Godlewski tickets.[13][2][18]

Issue evidence — side by side

Recorded votes, documented positions and candidates’ own words are shown with sources. “In their own words” quotes a candidate on the topic without inferring a stance. Votes describe specific bills or motions; they do not establish overall support or opposition to a broad issue. A dash means our research has no evidence on that topic, not that the candidate has no position.

Expand immigration enforcement and deportations

  • David Crowley
    —
  • Tom Tiffany

Would ban sanctuary policies statewide and require local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities; as a House member voted yes on the Laken Riley Act.

Faster transition away from fossil fuels

  • David Crowley
    Supports[4][14]

His plan proposes investing in solar power, energy retrofits and clean infrastructure; as county executive he signed Milwaukee County's Climate Action 2050 plan targeting net-zero emissions from county operations by 2050.

  • Tom Tiffany
    Mixed[7]

Says he would stop shutting down reliable baseload power, embrace next-generation nuclear, and restore local control over large-scale wind and solar siting.

Universal, publicly funded child care

    Supports[4]

His plan proposes universal early childhood education, a 7% cap on out-of-pocket child care costs and direct support for providers.

Research notes & limits

Running mates are listed in each candidate's ballotNote rather than as separate entries. Ballotpedia and the Wisconsin Elections Commission's live candidate pages were blocked; the slate was checked against a printed official November 3 ballot (City of Glendale clerk), which lists only the Tiffany/Varnam and Crowley/Godlewski tickets for governor, and against the Commission's June 9, 2026 Ballot Access Report (Candidate Tracking by Office), which approved only major-party candidates for governor and recommended denying all independent filers (Ballotpedia lists six independents, none of whom the report approved), plus WUWM (Oct. 13) and BallotReady, which list only Crowley and Tiffany. Tiffany's campaign pages and the Milwaukee County Right to Counsel press release are behind bot checks and were read from Internet Archive copies of the same pages. Federal key votes for Tiffany and campaign-finance totals are expected to be added by script. Primary-result percentages come from Wikipedia's results tables (citing state returns).
