Biography

H. Brooke Paige of Washington, Vermont, is the Republican nominee for Secretary of State. He first ran for statewide office in 2012 and says this is about his fifth run for the office. He says the Secretary of State should not be involved in counting ballots, citing a conflict of interest.[1][2]

Basic profile — the most important sourced facts we found.

H. Brooke Paige earned a B.A. in business administration from the University of Delaware, according to Ballotpedia.[3] After graduating he worked as a food service manager and then in sales for a pharmaceutical laboratory, and went on to own and operate a newsstand business.[3]

Paige is a justice of the peace in his town and serves on its board of civil authority.[1] He says he has filed several lawsuits against the Secretary of State over election matters, and that this experience and his past runs for the office prepared him for the role.[1]

In the 2026 primaries Paige ran for four statewide offices: attorney general, state auditor, treasurer and secretary of state.[1] Vermont Public reports that he has entered open statewide Republican primaries for the past decade so that Democrats cannot win those nominations with write-in candidates.[2] After he was certified the winner in 2026, he withdrew from the attorney general, auditor and treasurer contests, the Vermont Republican committee chose replacements, and he remained on the ballot as the party's candidate for secretary of state.[1][2]

Priorities

  • Moving ballot-counting and election results away from the Secretary of State toward town boards of civil authority, which he says is the model in the Vermont Constitution.[4]
  • Asked what he would do differently from the current Secretary of State, he said: "I would follow the Constitution."[4]
  • Argues the Secretary of State has a conflict of interest in counting ballots for races in which the Secretary is a candidate: "The Secretary of State should not be involved in the counting of the ballots."[4]
