Basic profile — the most important sourced facts we found.

Petersen earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1976.[4] He describes himself as a Nebraska business owner and conservative leader with more than 30 years of experience building and operating businesses in the state.[1]

Petersen served as chairman of the Douglas County Republican Party and sits on the Nebraska Republican Party's State Executive Committee, and he was a delegate to the 2024 Republican National Convention.[1][3][5] In 2020 he was the Republican candidate for Douglas County Clerk-Comptroller and lost to incumbent Daniel Esch, a Democrat, with 45.8% of the vote.[4] He has never held elected office.[3]

Petersen challenged Evnen from the right and won the May 12, 2026 Republican primary with 54.6% of the vote to Evnen's 45.4%.[2][4][3][5] He has said his priorities are secure, transparent and accountable elections, and that he would bring a business-minded approach to the office's business services and public records work.[1][2]
