Biography

Basic profile — the most important sourced facts we found.

Demuth was born in Paynesville, Minnesota, and lives in Cold Spring.[1][7] Before entering the Legislature she ran a small business and served 11 years on the ROCORI school board.[1][3]

Demuth was first elected to the Minnesota House in 2018 and led the House Republican minority in 2023 and 2024, after being elected House Republican leader in 2022.[1][8] She was elected Speaker on February 6, 2025, under a power-sharing agreement that ended a DFL boycott, after the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that her January election as Speaker lacked a quorum.[1] Her campaign says she was the first Black lawmaker to serve as Speaker.[3]
