Governor of Maine

Statewide — all of Maine

General election · Tuesday, November 3, 2026

Sources re-checked October 19, 2026 · How we research

  • Open seat: Democratic Gov. Janet Mills is term-limited. Maine has no lieutenant governor, so there are no running mates. Maine uses ranked-choice voting in primaries but not in the governor's general election, so the winner needs only a plurality.[1]
  • Democratic primary (June 9, 2026): the ranked-choice tabulation went to a final round in which Hannah Pingree won with 56.2% of continuing ballots over Nirav Shah; Troy Jackson, Shenna Bellows and Angus King III were eliminated in earlier rounds.[1]
  • Republican primary: Bobby Charles led the first round with about 38% and won the nomination after seven rounds of ranked-choice tabulation; Jonathan Bush, Garrett Mason, Ben Midgley, David Jones, Owen McCarthy and Robert Wessels also received votes, and State Sen. James Libby, who had suspended his campaign, remained on the ballot and finished last.[1]
  • The Secretary of State's certified general-election candidate list shows three candidates for governor: Hannah Pingree (D), Bobby Charles (R) and Rick Bennett, who is on the ballot as an independent. Bennett is a state senator and former chair of the Maine Republican Party who left the party in 2025. Two declared write-in candidates, John Glowa and Randy Wilcox, appear on the Secretary of State's October 15 write-in list.[16][17][2][18]

Issue evidence — side by side

Recorded votes, documented positions and candidates’ own words are shown with sources. “In their own words” quotes a candidate on the topic without inferring a stance. Votes describe specific bills or motions; they do not establish overall support or opposition to a broad issue. A dash means our research has no evidence on that topic, not that the candidate has no position.

Research notes & limits

The slate was checked against the Maine Secretary of State's certified 2026 General Election Candidates List (Excel, filed 7/27/2026) and the declared write-in list updated 10/15/2026: the only governor candidates are Pingree (D), Charles (R) and Bennett (independent/unenrolled), with write-ins John Glowa and Randy Wilcox. Primary results are from the Wikipedia race article (its first-round figure for Charles is 38.0% in the table and 37.7% in the text, so the guide says about 38%). Ballotpedia blocked automated access. Maine has no lieutenant governor, so there are no running mates. Pingree's record items rest on her campaign's accomplishments page; the guide attributes them to her campaign. The Kid-Safe law text is cited from the legislature's page (L.D. 2048). Charles has never held elected office, so no record items. Bennett's record items are Maine Senate roll calls checked against the official roll-call PDFs; he voted both for L.D. 208 (minority report) and for the L.D. 1230 ought-not-to-pass report, so no gun-law position is inferred. No position is inferred from Bennett's votes alone; they appear only as record items. Charles's website could not be located, so his priorities come from news coverage of his statements; his abortion and immigration positions were not found as direct statements. On 2026-10-19 the Secretary of State xlsx and write-in PDF were re-fetched successfully (the xlsx lists GOV: Bennett Independent, Charles R, Pingree D; the PDF lists John Glowa and Randy Wilcox); The Maine Monitor's governor guide corroborates.
